Eastern Michigan University's track and field teams are set to begin their 2025 outdoor season with three meets from March 27-29. The events include the Texas Relays at the University of Texas at Austin, the Bobcat Invitational at Texas State University, and the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State University.
The EMU Eagles will be returning key athletes such as Kyra Buffen and Formula Thompson. Both secured victories in the triple jump at last year's MAC Outdoor Championships. Buffen's winning mark was a 12.64m jump, making her the first Eastern woman to win since 1999. Thompson won with a 15.57m jump, becoming the first EMU male jumper to achieve this since Donald Scott in 2015.
The Eagles bring back seven All-MAC athletes for this season. Among them are Buffen and Thompson on the First Team, while Paige Marchant, Saraiah Walkes, Josephine Oloye, Gabe Singh, and Jake McEachern make up the Second Team.
For NCAA East Prelims returners, Thompson qualified for his performance in the triple jump along with Kayenn Mabin in the 110m hurdles and Jake McEachern in hammer throw. On the women's side, Buffen competed in triple jump and Anita Zaro participated in the 3000m steeplechase.
On an international level, McEachern won several events at Canada's U20 Track & Field Championships. Thompson participated in Jamaica's Olympic Trials while Mabin took part in USA's U20 Championships.
In last year's MAC Outdoors finish, Eastern's women ranked second with 126.5 points while men placed third with 121 points. Kent State claimed victory on the women's side and Akron led for men.
EMU has restructured its coaching staff for this season. Chris Best and Sterling Roberts have been promoted to Directors of Cross Country/Track & Field roles for women’s and men’s teams respectively. Sue Parks returns as Associate Head Coach alongside new additions Austin Whitelaw (distance) and Nia Henderson (throws).
Following these meets, EMU will compete next week at Michigan State's Spartan Invitational on April 4th and Oakland’s Golden Grizzlies Invitational on April 5th.
