Eastern Michigan University and the Mid-American Conference have announced that Ben Braun, former EMU men's basketball coach, will be inducted into the 2025 MAC Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is scheduled for May 29 at the Marriott Key Tower in Cleveland.
"I am extremely honored and proud to be selected to the MAC Hall of Fame," Braun stated. He expressed gratitude for his experiences within the conference, known for its traditions and commitment to excellence.
Braun is set to become the 11th representative from Eastern Michigan in the MAC Hall of Fame. His predecessors include notable figures such as Charlie Batch and Hasely Crawford. MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher remarked on celebrating the achievements of those who have contributed significantly to the conference.
Joining Braun in this year's induction class are Carolyn Condit, Jenny Gilbert, Marny Oestreng, and Jake Percival. "The MAC Hall of Fame stands as a tribute to dedication and excellence," added Steinbrecher.
The MAC Hall of Fame was established by the MAC Council of Presidents in 1987 with its first class inducted in 1988. After a hiatus, it resumed inductions in 2012, now totaling 130 members across 19 classes.
Reflecting on his career, Braun said: "It still seems surreal to me." He acknowledged those who supported him during his tenure at EMU.
Braun's coaching career at Eastern Michigan was marked by significant achievements including three Mid-American Conference Regular Season Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances. His leadership led EMU to its first NCAA Tournament appearance within two years of taking over as head coach.
His teams achieved victories over major programs like Duke and Penn State. Coach Mike Krzyzewski once praised Braun's high standards and appreciation for basketball fundamentals.
Beyond wins, Braun mentored players who advanced professionally, including NBA athletes Grant Long and Earl Boykins. Former players have taken up coaching roles at various institutions like Missouri and Georgia Tech.
After leaving Eastern Michigan, Braun coached at the University of California with notable success before serving as head coach at Rice University. He remains active in broadcasting with ESPN among others.
In recognition of his contributions, Eastern Michigan named their court "Ben Braun Court" in November 2023. This dedication reflects his lasting impact on EMU Basketball which will now be honored further with his induction into the MAC Hall of Fame.
