The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) baseball team experienced mixed results during their doubleheader against Western Michigan University, securing a victory in the first game with a score of 10-8 but falling in the second game, 14-4. The games took place on Friday, March 14, at Robert J. Bobb Stadium in Kalamazoo.
In the opening match, Cooper Vance from New Waterford, Ohio, was instrumental for EMU by achieving a career-high four RBIs and matching his career best with three hits. Cal Rutherford of Canton, Michigan, contributed to the win by allowing no earned runs in one inning from the bullpen. Fischer Hendershot from Flushing, Michigan, sealed the game with his second save of the season.
The initial innings saw limited offensive action until EMU's Giano Zuccaro hit a single in the fourth inning. Vance later brought home Ty Stecko to even out Western's lead gained through an earlier RBI triple. A back-and-forth battle ensued as both teams exchanged leads until EMU surged ahead in the ninth inning with an eight-run rally initiated by Vance being hit by a pitch.
Despite losing momentum into the second game of the day, where Western Michigan dominated after scoring six runs in one inning and maintaining control throughout most of the contest. However, EMU's Ty Stecko managed to record his third home run of the year during this matchup.
Eastern now holds a record of 4-1 within conference play and stands tied for second place in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Their overall season record is balanced at 8-8.
Both teams are scheduled to conclude their series on Saturday afternoon at Robert J. Bobb Stadium.
