The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) tennis team concluded its non-conference schedule with a decisive 7-0 victory over Saginaw Valley State University. The match took place at the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti on March 14. EMU won all nine matches, including three doubles and six singles, against the Cardinals.
Head Coach Ryan Kucera expressed satisfaction with the team's performance: "It was an inspiring performance today," he said. "The team was really motivated to finish the non-conference season on a high note."
In doubles, Viki Hazmukova and Marta Komar started strong with a 6-1 win at No. 2. Sabina Brichackova and Prerna Vichare secured the doubles point with a 6-2 victory at No. 1, marking their 67th career match together. Their win tied Brichackova for 19th on EMU's all-time doubles win list. Lara Diaz Zayas and Daniella Shved completed the sweep with a 6-3 win at No. 3.
The singles matches saw similar success for EMU, beginning with Diaz Zayas's flawless 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6. Kseniia Saenko followed with a straight-set win of her own, while Shved clinched the overall team victory with her triumph at No. 1 singles.
Additional wins by Hazmukova, Komar, and Regina Mendez ensured that EMU did not drop a single set throughout the competition.
Coach Kucera praised his players' energy and confidence: "We were decisive and confident across all six positions today," he stated.
With this result, Eastern Michigan has now achieved back-to-back sweeps for the first time since the 2021-22 season.
Next up for EMU is their Mid-American Conference opener against Northern Illinois University on March 16 in DeKalb, Illinois.
