The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) tennis team is heading to Southern California for two matches this week. The Eagles will face the University of California San Diego and the University of California Riverside on consecutive days. The first match against the Tritons is scheduled for Wednesday, February 26, at 2 p.m. ET in La Jolla, California. The following day, EMU will play against the Highlanders in Riverside at 1 p.m. ET.
Eastern Michigan's recent performance includes a home doubleheader sweep on February 22, with victories over Findlay and Eastern Illinois. "Eastern swept a home doubleheader," states an EMU release, highlighting their current three-match winning streak after previously losing four consecutive matches.
The Eagles have been successful in securing doubles points this season, winning six out of nine opportunities. Despite not always claiming the doubles point, they managed to win singles matches against Findlay with Daniella Shved clinching the decisive victory at No. 1 singles.
The team's roster comprises ten players from nine different countries including Argentina and India among others. Head Coach Ryan Kucera is in his second season and aims to lead the team to another MAC Tournament appearance following last year's fourth-place finish.
Their opponents this week present varied challenges: UC San Diego has a record of 4-5 overall and 2-1 in Big West play while UC Riverside stands at 2-7 overall without a conference win yet this season.
This trip marks EMU's return to California since their last visit in 2017 when they lost all three matches during that tour.
Looking ahead, Eastern Michigan will host the University of Illinois Chicago on March 8 back home in Ypsilanti.
