State Representative Jerry Neyer has successfully advanced his legislative proposal aimed at closing the revolving door between lawmakers and lobbyists. The House Government Operations Committee approved the measure, with votes cast along party lines.

Neyer, a Republican from Shepherd, emphasized the need for accountability in state government. "We’re here to represent our communities, not line up future job opportunities," he stated. He expressed concern over the trend of legislators transitioning swiftly into lobbying roles after leaving office. Some have even been found lobbying in other states while still serving in Michigan’s Legislature, an issue Neyer's House Bill 4064 seeks to address.

The proposed legislation includes additional bills, HBs 4062 and 4063, which would impose a two-year ban on former state representatives, senators, and directors of state departments from becoming lobbyists after their tenure.

"It’s refreshing to see committee members recognize the importance of getting this legislation passed and signed into law as soon as possible," Neyer remarked. He stressed that swift action would deter lawmakers from engaging with lobbying groups for future employment prospects.

With committee approval secured, HBs 4062-4064 will proceed to the full House for further debate and consideration.
