The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) track and field teams are set to participate in two significant events this weekend. They will compete at the GVSU Big Meet hosted by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, and the Tiger Paw Invitational hosted by Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina, from February 14-15.
Fans can keep up with both events through live results links available on the EMU track and field schedule page. Last season at the GVSU Big Meet, the Eagles achieved four top-five finishes on the men's side while Miranda Cadwell led the women's team with two top-ten finishes. At that event, the women recorded five personal bests while the men had three.
The men's team last participated in the Tiger Paw Invitational during the 2022-23 indoor season where former Eagles Almighty Williamson and Yvan Lopes Ribeiro competed in the 60m hurdles. The EMU women's team has not competed at this meet since at least 1998.
Recently at the Michigan Invitational on February 8, both programs combined to set four marks ranking within the Mid-American Conference (MAC) top three while achieving 38 personal bests. Notable performances included Saraiah Walkes' third-place finish in the 200m with a time of 23.80 seconds, Micah Martin's first-place high jump tying her personal best at 1.75 meters, Kyra Buffen's triple jump win with a leap of 12.20 meters for third-best in MAC rankings this season, and Carson McCoy’s leading MAC time of 1:50.28 in the 800m.
Carson McCoy was named MAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week after his performance at Michigan Invitational which marked his career-first conference athlete award.
In terms of conference standings, EMU men currently hold 23 marks within MAC's top five across various events while EMU women have secured 14 such marks.
Both teams are recognized as top contenders within their conference according to USTFCCCA rankings. The men's team ranks as MAC's best and holds regional rank as well while women’s team ranks ninth regionally as well as being highest among non-power five teams.
Upcoming changes include coaching adjustments where Chris Best and Sterling Roberts take over as Directors of Cross Country/Track & Field for respective genders alongside new additions Austin Whitelaw (distance) and Nia Henderson (throws).
The Eagle teams will wrap up their regular indoor season schedule next week at Silverston Invitational hosted by Michigan on February 21st.
