The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) lacrosse team faced a challenging start to their 2025 season, losing to San Diego State University with a final score of 15-10. The match took place on Sunday, February 9, at the EMU Indoor Practice Facility in Ypsilanti.
Mackenzie Blackwell and Katheryn Wilson each scored four goals for the Eagles. Despite their efforts, a strong fourth quarter from San Diego State allowed the Aztecs to secure victory with a 7-3 run.
Blackwell initiated scoring for EMU early in the game, but SDSU quickly responded with two goals. The first quarter ended with both teams trading goals, including collegiate firsts for Wilson and Emerson Henry.
Wilson tied the game early in the second quarter, but SDSU regained momentum before halftime. The third quarter saw limited scoring from both sides, ending at 8-7 in favor of SDSU after Wilson completed her hat trick.
In the final quarter, Abby Alderman narrowed SDSU's lead to one goal before they extended it with three consecutive shorthanded scores. Blackwell's fourth goal briefly interrupted SDSU's streak. However, further attempts by EMU were not enough as SDSU closed out the game strongly.
The match was notable as Maddie Dugan’s debut as head coach for EMU and featured several players making their collegiate debuts. Noteworthy performances included Blackwell and Wilson's four-goal games; Blackwell is now nearing career milestones of 100 points and goals.
Despite this loss marking an all-time low season-opening record for EMU at home, there were positive takeaways such as Maddie Porter's performance in goal with 11 saves and seven ground balls—ranking among her best career outings.
Eastern Michigan will next face Notre Dame on February 15 in South Bend.
