The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) lacrosse team is set to host San Diego State University on Sunday, February 9, at the EMU Indoor Practice Facility in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The game marks the start of EMU's third varsity season and the first under new head coach Maddie Dugan. The opening draw is scheduled for noon.
Maddie Dugan steps into her role as head coach after a successful tenure at Detroit Mercy, where she was named the 2024 MAC Coach of the Year. Under her leadership, Detroit Mercy reached the MAC Tournament championship game despite being predicted to finish seventh in standings.
In 2024, EMU finished with a record of 7-9 overall and 4-2 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC), earning them a third-place finish and their first postseason berth as a three-seed in the MAC Tournament. This was an improvement from their previous season when they had only two wins. The Eagles were picked to finish third in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll this year, receiving their first-ever first-place vote.
The team roster includes 33 players with 22 returning from last season. Notable returnees include Mackenzie Blackwell and Maddie Porter, both recognized for their achievements last year. Blackwell earned All-MAC First Team honors while Porter was named MAC Freshman of the Year.
San Diego State ended its previous season with a record of 2-14 and will be looking to improve upon that performance this year. Their top scorers Sara Toner and Frankie Garcia are back for another season.
This upcoming match will be the first encounter between Eastern Michigan and San Diego State. Following this game, EMU will play against Notre Dame on February 15 in South Bend, Indiana.
