The Eastern Michigan University swim and dive team is set to honor its seven seniors at the annual Senior Extravaganza event on Saturday, February 8, at Jones Natatorium. The celebration will feature a mix of traditional swimming and diving events along with themed games and challenges. The event is free for attendees.
This year's Senior Extravaganza has a space theme and will recognize swimmers Olivia Clarino, Ashley George, Kiersten Russell, Madelyn Sursi, Abby Szadorski, as well as divers Rebekah Knapp and Ciara Wheeler.
Sophomore Tristen Mina recently achieved a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.94 seconds against Ohio. This performance secured her spot in the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America National Invitational Championships (CSCAA NIC) and placed her among the program's top ten times.
Four divers from EMU have qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships scheduled for March 10-12 in Columbus. Megan Lupa recently qualified with a personal-best score of 284.25 points in the 3-meter dive against Ohio. She joins teammates Malia Maire, Knapp, and Wheeler at the competition.
Several EMU swimmers have earned CSCAA NIC cuts during recent meets. Notably, Abby Szadorski achieved this in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:29.09 at the Denison Invitational. Teammates Russell and Nehir Oz also earned cuts during this event.
Currently, eight times posted by Eagles swimmers rank within the top sixteen in their conference events this season.
In recent competitions, EMU faced Ohio on January 31-February 1 but fell short with a score of 272.5-79.5. Prior to that meet, they secured a victory over Toledo on January 17 with notable performances from Russell and Szadorski.
The team began its season strong under head coach Derek Perkins but experienced some setbacks along the way. As they approach their final regular-season meet at Michigan First Chance Meet on February 15-16, expectations remain high for further accomplishments.
