In the latest episode of Eastern Insider, hosts Tom Helmer and Greg Steiner opened with a lighthearted discussion on Punxsutawney Phil's shadow and the movie Groundhog Day. Helmer shared a personal connection, having interned at KCAL-TV in Los Angeles, featured in the film.
The conversation then shifted to sports, highlighting a challenging week for EMU basketball. The women's team marked Alumni Day with 30 former players but lost to Toledo. Despite this setback, head coach Sahar Nusseibeh remains optimistic as they prepare for an important game against Miami.
For the men's team, inconsistency was an issue. A loss at Western Michigan resulted in a five-way tie for fifth place in the MAC. Coach Stan Heath expressed frustration over the conference schedule which denies EMU another chance against rival Western. With Kent State next, a win is crucial for postseason hopes.
Other sports were also discussed. Lacrosse standout Mackenzie Blackwell aims to reach her 100-goal milestone and earn Offensive Player of the Year honors as she enters her junior season. "I plan on leading the stat line once again," Blackwell said.
Blackwell praised new coaching staff contributions: "Maddie brings a lot of good things...She really highlights our strengths." The Eagles face tough opponents like Notre Dame and Michigan this season.
Pitcher Bobby Jones reflected on his previous season's success, emphasizing his changeup's role in his performance. "One of my key successes was my final success with my changeup," he noted.
Jones now looks forward to building on last year's achievements and integrating new talent into EMU's starting rotation as they face Pitt in Florida soon.
