The Eastern Michigan University tennis team faced a challenging match against Oakland University, resulting in a 5-2 loss at the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti. This defeat ended the Eagles' 13-match home winning streak.
"We definitely finished strong today, (we) just dug ourselves too big of a hole," said Head Coach Ryan Kucera. "I am proud of the way we fought to the end, but we need to make it a priority to bring better energy and urgency from the start of the match."
The Eagles were unable to secure the doubles point for the first time this season, as Oakland won matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, gaining an early lead. The duo of Lara Diaz Zayas and Prerna Vichare managed a win at No. 3 doubles with a score of 6-4.
In singles play, Oakland extended their advantage with victories at No. 1 and No. 4 singles. Kseniia Saenko achieved a three-set victory at No. 5 singles with scores of 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, providing one point for Eastern Michigan. Despite this effort, Oakland secured their overall win with triumphs at No. 2 and No. 3 singles before Regina Mendez clinched another point for Eastern Michigan by winning her match at No. 6 singles with scores of 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Eastern Michigan will next compete against Michigan State University on February 2 in East Lansing.
