The Eastern Michigan University tennis team commenced its 2025 dual season with a strong performance, securing two victories against Ferris State University. The matches took place on January 18 at the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti. The Eagles won the first match 7-0 and followed it up with a 4-0 win.
Head Coach Ryan Kucera expressed satisfaction with the team's start to the season. "Our play for both doubles points were fantastic, especially in the second dual where we were aggressive and dominating the middle of the court," he said. He praised Sabina Brichackova and Prerna Vichare for their dominance at No. 1 doubles and commended freshmen Viki Hazmukova and Lara Diaz Zayas for earning their first career clinches.
In doubles, Brichackova and Vichare secured a victory at No. 1 doubles with a score of 6-1, while Hazmukova and Marta Komar clinched the point at No. 2 doubles with a 6-4 win. In singles, all six players won in straight sets, starting with Diaz Zayas' victory at No. 5 singles.
After a break, Eastern Michigan continued its momentum into the second match. Brichackova and Vichare won again at No. 1 doubles, while Hazmukova and Komar triumphed at No. 2 doubles. In singles play, Vichare quickly secured her match at No. 2 singles before Hazmukova claimed victory at No. 1 singles.
The day's success was highlighted by Hazmukova's four wins across singles and doubles matches, as well as Diaz Zayas' two victories in singles play that contributed to clinching points for the team.
Eastern Michigan improved its record to 2-0 overall with these wins against Ferris State, which served as exhibition matches for Ferris State without affecting their season record.
Looking ahead, Eastern Michigan will travel to Ohio for upcoming matches against the University of Cincinnati on January 25 and the University of Dayton on January 26.
