Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has won the Mid-American Conference Canned Food Drive Competition. The event saw participation from student-athletes, staff, and fans who collected 3,433 canned goods, exceeding the University at Buffalo's total of 1,228.
The competition was organized by EMU's Student-Athlete Advisory Council. The donations are directed to Swoop's Pantry and the Kroger Corporation's Fight to End Childhood Hunger initiative.
Sam Borgert, EMU SAAC President and Lacrosse student-athlete said, "It was inspiring to see all of our student-athletes and administrators come together to support such an incredible organization." He expressed pride in the collective effort that led to the success of the drive.
In a show of sportsmanship tied to the competition rules, University at Buffalo Vice President and Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt wore an EMU football jersey and helmet during a game on November 20th as part of his commitment after his school did not win.
"We're incredibly proud of how the EMU community rallied together for such an important cause," stated Scott Wetherbee, EMU Vice President/Director of Athletics. He noted that this reflects the dedication and compassion within their community. Donations will continue through December in support of Kroger’s mission against childhood hunger.
