Hatteras Welker set a new record for Eastern Michigan University (EMU) by achieving the highest number of blocks by a freshman in a single season. She recorded six blocks during EMU's match against Ball State University at Worthen Arena on Friday, November 1. This brings her total to 110 blocks this season, placing her eighth on EMU's all-time single-season blocks leaderboard.
Anna Guard contributed eight kills, leading the Eagles' offensive efforts, while Hannah Blaney added nine digs. Despite these performances, EMU faced a setback as they lost in straight sets to Ball State.
In the first set, despite recording nine blocks, the Eagles fell short with a 25-17 loss. The second set saw them trailing significantly before losing 25-18. In the final set, despite a .323 attack percentage and 15 kills, EMU lost 25-19.
The Eagles achieved their 13th game with double-digit blocks this season and out-blocked Ball State 10-6. Maddie Stayer led with 22 assists while Lauren Welch reached a season-high of seven digs.
Friday's match was the 89th encounter between the two teams, resulting in EMU holding a record of 28-61 against Ball State overall and 10-30 when playing in Muncie.
Welker's performance has placed her at the top of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) for both total blocks and blocks per set (1.29). The current team has accumulated the third-most total blocks in program history with their sights set on breaking further records.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Saturday, November 2.
