Central Michigan University's Leadership Safari 2024 welcomed over 1,100 new students to campus, offering a program aimed at easing their transition into college life. This annual event is a multi-day leadership camp that introduces participants to leadership principles, team-building activities, and community engagement. The program aims to create excitement and provide a foundation of belonging for incoming students.

The event also involves the broader campus community, with 179 student volunteers serving as staff members. These volunteers, known as C Team members and Safari Guides, play a crucial role in helping new students navigate their initial days on campus and fostering an inclusive environment.

One participant reflected on the experience: “Safari was a positive look into the upcoming years of college from a rural background of my own and many others. It was inspiring and created a sense of purpose for its willing participants.” This sentiment is shared by many attendees who found the program pivotal in their journey at CMU.

Post-event surveys indicate that 88% of participants felt they belonged at Central Michigan University after attending Leadership Safari. Creating this sense of belonging is one of the program's primary objectives.

Mai-Ling Francis, Assistant Director of the Leadership Institute, expressed pride in the ongoing success of Leadership Safari. “Safari is proud to continue welcoming students home to campus, right alongside the IMPACT program,” she stated. “Our goal is to create an inclusive, supportive environment where every student feels like they are a part of the CMU community from day one.”

Students interested in becoming more involved can apply to be part of next year's C Team or serve as Safari Guides. Applications are open until Friday, November 15. Interested individuals can apply online via Engage Central or contact SAFARI@cmich.edu for further inquiries.
