English professor Carlin Borsheim-Black has been recognized for her contributions to the field of English education. The Michigan Council of Teachers of English (MCTE) awarded her the Charles Carpenter Fries Award for 2024-2025, acknowledging her distinguished career in advancing English teaching.

MCTE members highlighted Borsheim-Black's service at both local and national levels, noting her leadership in literary instruction, antiracist education, and dialogic teaching. A former high school teacher, Borsheim-Black expressed gratitude for the recognition: “Receiving the Charles Carpenter Fries Award is especially meaningful to me because it comes from members of my English teaching community, who I respect and admire so much.”

Her work focuses on antiracist teaching challenges and opportunities, particularly in predominantly white, rural areas with political divides. Her book "Letting Go of Literary Whiteness: Antiracist Literature Instruction for White Students," co-authored with Dr. Sophia Sarigianides, earned the 2022 Outstanding Book Award from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.

Borsheim-Black will serve as this year's Fries honoree and will be celebrated at MCTE's spring conference in March 2025.
