The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) football team began its 2024 season with a victory, defeating the University of Massachusetts (UMass) 28-14 in non-conference play at McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst, Mass., on Saturday, Aug. 31.
After a scoreless first quarter, EMU's Cole Snyder led a 10-play, 97-yard touchdown drive, concluding with his one-yard rush for the score. Later in the half, Snyder connected with Oran Singleton for an 18-yard touchdown pass, giving EMU a 14-0 lead at halftime.
UMass responded in the third quarter with a touchdown after a 10-play, 70-yard drive. However, EMU extended its lead as Jesús Gómez made field goals from 19 and 31 yards. Delbert Mimms III added another touchdown with a six-yard run, followed by Snyder's two-point pass to Markus Allen, making it 28-7. UMass scored late to finalize the margin.
Cole Snyder completed his debut for EMU by throwing for 241 yards and one touchdown while rushing for another score. Oran Singleton led receivers with eight catches for 89 yards and one touchdown. The defense recorded six sacks, led by Justin Jefferson with two.
With this win, EMU improved to 1-0 on the year and has now won four consecutive games against UMass. The Eagles also continued their streak of winning season openers and non-conference games since 2015.
Next week, EMU will face the University of Washington Huskies on Sept. 7 at Husky Stadium.
