Eastern Michigan University (EMU) volleyball team began the 2024 season with a split outcome in their opening-night doubleheader at the Hampton Inn Invitational, hosted by Indiana University Indianapolis (IU-Indy). The Eagles fell to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) in straight sets, 3-0, but rebounded to defeat IU-Indy in a five-set match, 3-2.
In the match against SIUE, EMU lost the first set 25-22 after SIUE took control at 13-12. The second set saw EMU fall behind early and lose 25-13. SIUE completed the sweep with a 25-20 win in the third set.
Against IU-Indy, EMU dropped a close first set 28-26 despite tying it up multiple times. They leveled the match with a 27-25 victory in the second set, thanks to a .344 attack percentage and solid defense. However, they fell behind again after losing the third set 25-17. The Eagles forced a fifth set by winning the fourth set convincingly, 25-12. They secured victory with a final score of 15-11 in the fifth set.
Notable performances included Ava Siefke leading EMU with four aces and nine newcomers making their debut for EMU. Ella Voorhees posted double-digit assists in both matches, while Hannah Blaney led defensively with significant digs.
The Eagles will next face Valparaiso University on Saturday, Aug. 31, as part of the Hampton Inn Invitational.
