CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY: CMU’s generosity rises above year’s challenges

Central Michigan University issued the following announcement on Dec. 10.

When there's an opportunity to impact the life of students, the Central Michigan University family will rise to the occasion each and every time. This was evident on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 1, as the university community shattered expectations and exceeded the $175,000 fundraising goal by nearly $100,000.

"I am continually inspired by the generosity of our community. Our alumni and supporters are dedicated to lifting up our students and helping them pursue their passions and academic goals," CMU President Bob Davies said. "Through their philanthropic support, they have truly demonstrated their compassion and Fired-Up attitude. We know CMU Chippewas will always come together to support our students — that is what we do."

In a challenging year, CMU students proved they, too, meet difficulties head on. They adapted to new ways of learning and kept each other safe throughout the fall semester on campus with face-to-face learning options. More than 5,400 students earned their degrees in 2020.

Bryan Griffin, director of annual giving, said that's what makes this Giving Tuesday extra special.

"Considering the challenges of this year, I'm excited we raised more than $265,000," he said. "I'm thankful our community realizes the impact their generosity has on our students."

Real-world impact

The funds raised on Giving Tuesday will directly impact CMU students, allowing them the opportunity to focus on their education and become leaders in their field, in their communities and in life.

"These dollars will help students stay in school, and in some cases will provide food and other necessities they need each day," Griffin said.

Griffin noted $100,000 was raised for the Student Emergency Fund alone, which helps students pay for costs associated with unexpected circumstances.

Other initiatives featured in this year's Giving Tuesday campaign include:

  • Finish Up Chips Scholarship: Assists students who are close to graduation and at risk of dropping out for financial reasons pay for remaining credits.
  • Student First General Fund: Allows flexibility to provide students with funds when and where they are most needed.
  • Student Food Pantry: Aims to ensure hunger is not a barrier to academic success for any student.
  • ROTC Fund for Excellence: Helps ROTC leadership enhance the field training experience.
  • Chippewa Athletic Fund: Empowers student-athletes to graduate with a diploma in one hand and a championship ring in the other.
