MidMichigan Medical Center-Gladwin issued the following announcement on Oct. 10.
A free informational session will be held on Monday, Oct. 21, for those interested in learning about a new minimally-invasive procedure that is helping those who suffer from acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The event will take place at 6 p.m., in Conference Room 1200 of MidMichigan Medical Center – Mt. Pleasant.
Acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic, often progressive condition that affects one in five adults in the U.S. While many men and women manage their symptoms with medications and lifestyle changes, approximately 40 percent of suffers are still not finding the relief they need. The new LINX® Reflux Management System is designed to alleviate symptoms and strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter.
The system includes a flexible quarter-sized implantable device which consists of a series of magnetic titanium beads used to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter. These magnetic beads open to allow food and liquids to easily pass through when swallowing, then close to prevent stomach contents from moving up and stopping the reflux.
General Surgeon Jeffrey Bonacci, M.D., currently performs this procedure at MidMichigan Medical Centers in Gratiot and Mt. Pleasant. Dr. Bonaci will be hosting this seminar and is one of only nine surgeons in Michigan to perform this procedure.
The LINX System does not require any major changes to the anatomy. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes to perform under local anesthesia and patients go home the same or next day. The LINX system begins working immediately it restores the reflux barrier, reduces or eliminates dependence on medication, reduces gas and bloating, does not limit future treatment options, and is removable, and compatible with MRI.
