Congressman John Moolenaar has announced his support for the Stop Insider Trading Act, a bill introduced in Congress that aims to prohibit Members of Congress and their immediate families from purchasing stocks. The legislation would prevent lawmakers, their spouses, and dependent children from buying financial securities in publicly traded companies while holding office. It also requires public disclosure of any stock sale at least seven days before the transaction occurs and includes fines for violations.
Moolenaar stated, “Members of Congress are entrusted by the American people to represent them faithfully in Washington D.C. and should not use their position to enrich themselves off of insider information. It would be a betrayal of the public to do so otherwise,” adding, “This is commonsense legislation and I urge its immediate passage.”
John Moolenaar has represented Michigan’s 2nd district in the U.S. Congress since 2015, after succeeding Dave Camp. Before his time in Congress, he served in both the Michigan House of Representatives from 2003 to 2008 and the Michigan Senate from 2011 to 2014. Moolenaar was born in Midland, Michigan in 1961 and currently resides in Caledonia. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Hope College in 1983.
